This week, top criminal defense attorneys, public defenders, and civil rights advocates are gathering in Tulsa, Oklahoma, for NACDL's Race Matters Seminar, a national conversation confronting one of the most pressing issues in the American legal system: racial injustice.

My name is Audrey Bizzle, and as a mixed-race aspiring attorney and UCLA graduate, the first in my family, this seminar speaks to my ambition to build a legal career rooted in equity and community empowerment. I'm excited to see the top voices in the legal field gathering to address racial injustice and legal inequities.

The opening keynote by Jeffrey Robinson, founder and CEO of The Who We Are Project, and Dr. Tiffany Crutcher, an advocate for justice and the twin sister of Terence Crutcher, who was killed by police in Tulsa in 2016, is one that I'm particularly drawn to. Their conversation links the 1921 Tulsa Race Massacre to the 2016 police killing of Terence Crutcher and the current state of policing and race in our nation. These conversations are exactly the kind of truth-telling our legal system needs.
